Description
Piaget launched the Polo in 1979, and the idea behind it was to stop making a watch and a bracelet as two separate things. Case, dial and bracelet are worked as one continuous surface of alternating satin and polished gadroons — raised bands of gold that run without interruption from one end of the piece to the other. Even the dial carries the same relief, so that the hands appear to move across the same gold that wraps the wrist.
The consequence of that idea is a watch with no crown on its flank: it winds from beneath the case, leaving the silhouette clean on every side. There are no numerals and no applied markers, only the ribbing itself and two slim hands. The quartz movement is signed and running.
This is the round version in 18K yellow gold, and it is substantial — the weight sits almost entirely in the solid gold bracelet, which closes with its original signed hinged clasp. Worn as intended, the Polo reads less as a watch on a strap than as a gold bracelet that happens to tell the time.
