Description
A pair of ear clips built as bows, each one made from broad folded loops of gold that turn and fall as ribbon does when it is tied and released. The gold is worked with real depth, so the bows stand out from the ear rather than lying flat against it — the light moves across the curves as the head turns, and the shape reads differently from each angle.
Lines of brilliant-cut diamonds run along the folds, following the direction of each loop and catching its edges. The construction is two-tone: yellow gold for the body of the bow, white gold for the diamond-set lines, so the stones are separated from the metal by colour as well as by brightness. The result is defined detailing rather than allover pavé — the diamonds mark the movement of the ribbon instead of covering it.
The bow is among the most enduring subjects in jewellery, and it has stayed in use because it lets a goldsmith work volume and line at the same time.
